The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Micron, a US-based technology company, with the aim of fostering innovation and cultivating a highly skilled local workforce. This collaboration is geared towards supporting India's objective of achieving self-reliance in the semiconductor sector and bolstering the broader electronics ecosystem.
The partnership involves collaborative research in technology fields, offering experiential learning opportunities for students, facilitating student recruitment activities, and providing industry-relevant training. The Micron Semiconductor Lab, situated at the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering in IIT Roorkee, will prioritize the development of technical skills, processes, and resources necessary for the institute's adaptation and growth. This will be achieved through student internships, fellowships, specialized master’s and doctoral degree programs, an augmented curriculum, a physical lab, and a team of professors closely working with students on their technical development.
In a parallel initiative, the IIT Roorkee class of 1996 has committed to sponsoring the establishment of the 'Rahul Aggarwal- 96 Chair' at the institute. Named after alumnus Rahul Aggarwal from the 1996 batch, this chair, with support from both industry and academia, aims to facilitate research and academic initiatives within the Micron Semiconductor Lab. The focus areas include chip design, technology, modeling, characterization, and product development.
Anand Ramamoorthy, Managing Director of Micron India and an alumnus of IIT Roorkee, expressed gratitude for the collaboration and support from the alumni class of 1996. He emphasized that this initiative, aligned with the University Research Alliance, Micron (URAM) outreach, corresponds well with the objectives of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). The collaboration is anticipated to play a significant role in advancing semiconductor research and technology development in India.
